What is TMJ Dysfunction?
The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the place at the back of the mouth where your upper and lower jaws meet. This joint is primarily responsible for allowing your mouth to chew, yawn, and talk, but a TMJ disorder can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, such as:
- Jaw pain
- Lockjaw
- Clenching or grinding the teeth
- Headaches
- Ear pain
- Grinding, clicking, or popping sounds while eating
- Dizziness and/or ringing in the ears
While there is no specific cause of TMJ dysfunction, evidence suggests that the muscles of the jaw and disorders of the joint itself may play key roles in TMJ dysfunction.
