Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a condition that can cause embarrassment and social avoidance. At Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre, we offer BOTOX® Therapeutic injections for the non-surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis.

Located in Delta, British Columbia, Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre is led by Dr. Marcia Fleming and registered nurse Jennifer Sutherland. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and find out if you are a candidate for BOTOX® Therapeutic for hyperhidrosis.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Although everyone creates sweat as a way of cooling down the skin, sometimes the sweat glands can become overstimulated and produce an excessive amount of sweat that cannot be effectively controlled with deodorants or antiperspirants. This is a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis, characterized by overstimulated endocrine glands.

There are two kinds of hyperhidrosis:

  • Palmer hyperhidrosis: Excessive sweating in the hands and feet
  • Axillary hyperhidrosis: Excessive sweating in the underarms

How is Hyperhidrosis Treated?

There are several over-the-counter remedies for hyperhidrosis, including prescription strength and regular antiperspirants, medications, electrical treatments and surgery, but at Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre, we offer BOTOX® Therapeutic – a safe, easy solution that is clinically-proven to help reduce sweating without extensive surgery or downtime.

In the same way that BOTOX® Cosmetic prevents chemical signals from reaching underlying facial muscles, BOTOX® Therapeutic uses the same mechanism of action – the botulinum toxin – to block nerve signals from stimulating the sweat glands. When injected into various points throughout the treatment area, BOTOX Therapeutic® has been shown to actively reduce the amount of sweat within two weeks in some cases.

How Do I Know if I Have Hyperhidrosis?

In order to proceed with treatment, it should first be determined if hyperhidrosis is the cause of your excessive sweating. When evaluating this condition, a simple scale known as the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale is often used to assess your condition and determine the severity of your sweating using yes or no statements such as:

  • My sweating is never noticeable and never interferes with daily activities
  • My sweating is tolerable but sometimes interferes with daily activities
  • My sweating is barely tolerable and frequently interferes with daily activities
  • My sweating is intolerable always interferes with daily activities

Only a medical professional can accurately assess your condition and help you determine if you have hyperhidrosis as well as what the best course of treatment should be. Contact Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre today to schedule a consultation and find out how BOTOX® Therapeutic can potentially help your excessive sweating.
