What is TMJ Dysfunction?

The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the place at the back of the mouth where your upper and lower jaws meet. This joint is primarily responsible for allowing your mouth to chew, yawn, and talk, but a TMJ disorder can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, such as:

  • Jaw pain
  • Lockjaw
  • Clenching or grinding the teeth
  • Headaches
  • Ear pain
  • Grinding, clicking, or popping sounds while eating
  • Dizziness and/or ringing in the ears

While there is no specific cause of TMJ dysfunction, evidence suggests that the muscles of the jaw and disorders of the joint itself may play key roles in TMJ dysfunction. At Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre, our BOTOX® Therapeutic treatments can help restore normal functionality to your mouth and jaw.

TMJ Dysfunction Treatment

Just as BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the muscles of the face, BOTOX® Therapeutic is injected directly into the muscles that cause movement in the jaw, causing them to relax and alleviating TMJ dysfunction symptoms. Relaxing these muscles can also prevent teeth grinding while sleeping.

BOTOX® Therapeutic involves an ultrafine needle, causing minimal pain that is typically well-tolerated by most patients. This treatment is quick, allowing patients to return immediately to normal activities without any healing or downtime necessary. While many patients begin to feel relief after a few days, it may take a few weeks for the muscles of the TMJ to fully relax.

Do I Have TMJ Dysfunction?

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms associated with TMJ dysfunction and want to know if you are a candidate for BOTOX® Therapeutic treatment, our medical team can listen to your concerns during your consultation and help you determine if TMJ treatment with BOTOX® Therapeutic is right for you.

As the active ingredients in BOTOX® Therapeutic are processed by the body over time, regular treatment may be necessary in order to maintain your results.

Contact Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre today to schedule a consultation and find out if BOTOX® Therapeutic is the best course of treatment for your TMJ symptoms.
