Botox® Cosmetic is the brand name for a naturally occurring purified protein, botulinum toxin. Small amounts of this protein are injected into the specific facial muscles responsible for the creation of dynamic facial wrinkles, which are caused by the repetitive movement of muscles attached to the skin. The protein weakens the offending muscles, reducing the severity of the wrinkles on the face.
Due to its ability to quickly and effectively erase unwanted expression lines, Botox® is one of the most popular wrinkle treatments in North America. Historically it has been used mostly around the forehead and eyes, but now it is used anywhere on the face, neck and even the décolleté.
The most common Botox® applications include frown lines (vertical ‘furrows’ between your brows, causing you to look angry or anxious), crow’s feet (in the outer corner of the eyes, appearing prominently when you smile) and forehead lines (horizontal lines). Botox® also is used for neck bands (strong Platisma muscle), the chin/jaw and the lips. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm however, are used mostly in the lower face for deeper static wrinkles.
